Wenceslao (Wence) Martinez : Martinez Studio

1959 Born in Teotitlan del Valle, Oaxaca, Mexico. Zapotec Indian.

1971-74 Began weaving apprenticeship under his grandfather, Manuel Martinez and father, Còsme Martinez.
1974-77 Entered the National Institute of Weaving (Taller Nacional de Tapiz) in Mexico City under full scholarship. Studied design, gobelin and dyeing with Master Pedro Preux, Bertha Preciado and Edmundo Aquino.
1977 Commissioned to weave the drawings and paintings of Edmundo Aquino in his private studio.
1982 Commissioned by the Taller Nacional de Tapiz in Mexico City to produce a weaving of Carlos Merida’s design.

1983 Weaving specialty pieces in hand spun wool commissioned by various artists and developing personal interpretations of tribal patterns.
1988 Wove a series of tapestries designed by Sandra (Hackbarth) Martinez. The collection of 15 collaborative pieces were featured in Convergence ’88, International Textile Conference and exhibited throughout Chicago, IL including a solo exhibition at Topeka Gallery, The Field Museum, and The Mexican Fine Arts Center Museum, (now the National Museum of Mexican Art)

1994-Present Opened Martinez Studio in Jacksonport, Wisconsin on the Door County Peninsula. The gallery focuses on Wence and his wife Sandra’s work.

Wence is deeply honored that his tapestry, “Codice Nuttall” has been accepted into the permanent collection of  the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago IL, as a promised gift. Graciously donated by long time supporters, the collectors felt while they are currently enjoying the piece in their home, ultimately, the public should have access.

2012 Debuted on the national show circuit at Architectural Digest Home Show, NYC.
2013 Returned to the Architectural Digest Show. Juried.
2013 Debuted at the prestigious Smithsonian Craft Show in Washington D.C.
2013 JM Kohler Art Center, One and Only at ARTspace, Sheboygan, WI. By Invitation.
2014  Craftforms Show, Wayne Art Center, PA. Juried.
